Clay Animation Editing. After clay animation scenes have been completely shot it will then be necessary to place them together in some type of order. It may also be necessary to add sound, change the frame rate of a sequence, trim individual frames from a scene, or add reshoots. Editing is the process of placing completed visual sequences of a film project in order to convey a story. There are two types of film editing, linear and Non-Linear. Linear has been around since film was invented and is still used today. In the last few years Non-linear has taken over the industry because of the ability of computers to display high quality moving images. completed Linear edited sequence. Linear editing. Linear editing is the process of linking scenes together in a fixed order. Once the scene order has been completed it cannot be altered without damage to other scenes. Let's say you have 4 individual scenes of a film, which are titled 1, 2, 3, and 4. You then place scenes 1, 2, 3, and 4 onto a videotape in the fixed order of 1, 2, 3, and 4. You then view the completed videotape sequence and decide that the order of the 4 scenes is not what you wanted. You instead wish to add two new scenes, which are titled 9 and 12. The new scene order will be 1, 2, 9, 12, 3, and 4. To make these changes you need to go to the end of scene 2 on your videotape and then place scene 9 right after it. Then scene 12 gets placed after 9, but by adding scenes 9 and 12 scenes 2 and 3 will be deleted and have to be added again, but now after scene 12. This process of making editing changes using the linear method can be very time consuming depending on the size of the project. Linear example. Non Linear editing. Non-linear editing is the process of linking scenes together in any order and making changes in the sequences without affecting the other sequences. Let's say, again you have 4 individual scenes of a film, which are titled 1, 2, 3, and 4. You then place scenes 1, 2, 3, and 4 onto a computer in a video file format and then use a software package to place them in the fixed order of 1, 2, 3, and 4. You then view the completed sequence on the computer and decide that the order of the 4 scenes is not what you wanted. You instead wish to add two new scenes, which are titled 9 and 12. The new scene order will be 1, 2, 9, 12, 3, and 4. To make these changes you need to have the new scenes 9 and 12 also on the computer in a video file format. Then using a software editing program, the new scenes can be added to the timeline without affecting the scene 3, and 4. Non-linear editing is fast, easy to make changes. If a storyboard was created to shoot the scene from. it can also be used as a guide to edit the shots together. http://www.clayanimator.com
